Chapter Twenty-Two

Deafening silence and darkness went on as far as her eyes could see.

Rika blinked several times just to make sure that her eyes were actually open. The awkward stillness that engulfed her made her skin prickle. She looked around, not sure what for, but she expected a little more pomp. There was nothing, not even the ash white fog she had come to appreciate and fear.

A crack sounded off behind her and she whipped around to find Her Other looking back at her. She panicked, had she unfused? What did that mean for everyone outside of her body? Her Other looked absolutely pleased with herself however, smiling wide and eyes full of confidence, “This is the moment.” she said, her eyes glowing bright. Rika’s eyes responded in turn, bathing the darkness in a purple tint.

Two more cracks and the twins appeared. They looked at Rika with the same knowing smile and inclined their large heads in kind, “It’s time to say goodbye.”

The space shook with enormous energy that pressed down on them. A gentle laugh that sounded so close to Rebati’s filled the space as a woman materialized out of nothing. Her face came first, mouth wide as her beautifully adorned head tipped back as though her laugh would not come otherwise. Then her large, shaking chest bound in rich, deep reds and nearly-black blues grew and grew into an elegant, flowing dress. Her dark skin glowed from within, accented with the same colors shimmering within her garb.

“Erzulie Dantor,” Rika whispered, stricken almost mute in the warmth that washed over her. One of the Erzulie to represent femininity and womanhood. Queen of the Petro and protector of women and children. The loa of feminine rage to some.

Her Other fell into a deep bow. The loa laughed once more, the sound bouncing through Rika, reminding her that she was just there in essence. Erzulie Dantor clapped her hands, Rika’s Others lifted her head immediately and she quickly followed, “Well, I have been waiting to meet you, young one.”

Rika swallowed, “I am honored.”

The loa stepped forward and gave a gentle nod to the small twins flanking Rika, “How long have you two been in this girl?”

One giggled, “Too long.”

Her twin added, “Can we get her powers flowing so we can leave, please?”

Erzulie Dantor tilted her head to the side, her headscarf fluttering in the nonexistent breeze, “How did this even happen, Marassa Jumeaux? You’ve been missing for decades!”

Rika felt her eyebrows twitch, not in surprise because she had her suspicions after meeting them but out of shock at the confirmation, “Marassa Jumeaux…” she let their name roll around in her mouth for the first time, “I don’t really know what to say.”

One shrugged and turned to Erzulie, “Puberty sucks, did you know that?”

“I did not,” Erzulie chuckled, “Welcome back, old ones.”

Rika looked to Her Other for help. If what Erzulie said was true, she had two of the oldest loa in her body for years. The divine twins, the first to be born and the first to die.
